Josef Danilowatz

Josef Danilowatz (born November 22, 1877 in Vienna ; † November 20, 1945 there ) was an Austrian painter and draftsman .

life and work

Josef Danilowatz was the son of a Serbian hairdresser . He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Siegmund L'Allemand and William Unger . He then worked as a graphic artist and caricaturist for the weekly magazine Die Muskete , which made him quite popular. From 1919 he also created caricatures for the satirical magazine Der Götz von Berlichingen, published in Vienna . Danilowatz often stayed in Trieste , where he drew ships and port facilities. His technical interest led him to create illustrations in the field. It achieved its greatest popularity through the cover pages of the Märklin company model railway catalogs that he designed between 1930 and 1940 .

Josef Danilowatz was married to Maria Lasus. After his death, he received an honorary grave in the Döblinger Friedhof (group 2, row 3, number 1) in Vienna.

In 1955 Danilovatzgasse in Vienna- Meidling and Liesing was named after him.
