Jeurys Familia (born October 10, 1989 in San Cristóbal , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican baseball player . The pitcher has been active in Major League Baseball since the 2012 season . Except for a short break in 2019 , the Closer is under contract with the New York Mets .

Career

Minor Leagues

Familia, who never took part in an MLB draft , was signed by the New York Mets in 2007 and played 11 games as a starting pitcher in the Gulf Coast League for the minor league team GCL Mets in 2008 . In 2009 he started with the A-Level Team of the franchise , the Savannah Sand Gnats, in 23 of 24 missions and ended the year with a win-loss of 10–6 and an ERA of 2.69. After upgrading to the Advanced A Team St. Lucie Mets , he played a total of 30 times in 2010 and the first month of the 2011 season with a pitching record of 7-10 for St. Lucie. In May 2011, he moved into the second highest minor league class to the Binghamton Mets , where he made 17 starts. In 2012 Familia was upgraded to the top class of the Buffalo Bisons , got a pitching record of 9–9 with an ERA of 4.73 in 28 starts. At the beginning of September, Familia was appointed to the squad of the major league team for the first time.

Major League

Jeurys Familia made his debut on September 4, 2012 as a relief pitcher in the away game at the St. Louis Cardinals , in which he pitched the eighth inning . In the 2012 MLB season , he made eight appearances, one of them as a starter. All games were a no-decision for Familia , which means that he had neither a win nor a loss in the statistics at the end of the season.

At the beginning of the 2013 season , Familia played a game before he was transferred to the Las Vegas 51s , who had now replaced the Buffalo Bisons as the Mets' AAA team. After ten days, however, he was brought back to the MLB team. On May 12, 2013, Familia was placed on the Disabled List due to tendonitis in her right elbow . After conventional rehabilitation measures failed, he had to undergo arthroscopic surgery in June . After a rehabilitation phase in the minor leagues, Familia was reassigned to the MLB squad in September.

In the 2014 season , Familia became the Mets to setup man in front of closer Jenrry Mejía , i.e. the pitcher who normally plays in the eighth inning and thus before the closer, who is usually supposed to secure the game in the ninth. At the end of the season there were 76 missions with an ERA of 3.03, 73 strikeouts and five saves in Familias statistics.

After Jenrry Mejía was convicted of doping with anabolic steroids at the beginning of the 2015 season , another offense occurred in July 2015 and Mejía was banned for an entire season. Familia, who convinced the setup man in 2014 , was named the new Closer by the Mets. In 76 games in 2015 he recorded 43 saves for the Mets and impressed with a good ERA of 1.85. After eight years, the Mets also qualified again for the post season, so that Familia came to the first playoffs of his career. In the National League Division Series 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers , he was used in four of five games without conceding a single run and managed a save in game 1 and game 4 of the series. In the National League Championship Series in 2015 sweepten the Mets, the Chicago Cubs in four games in which Familia always remained as Closer without opposing Run and in three out of four games again the Saving Pitcher was. The 2015 World Series was less successful for Familia, as it was for the Mets as a whole. Even if officially only one earned run appears in his statistics in four appearances, he was only able to successfully finish one game. In three of four games he was substituted on while leading the Mets and left the Mound two times in a tie and one time behind.

After Familia used all 16 of its save chances in a row at the beginning of the 2016 season , he set a new franchise record for the Mets for the most successful saves in a row in the regular season. With his 32 saves in a row, he took over this team record from Billy Wagner , who had achieved 31 saves in a row in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. On June 24, 2016, Familia posted the 25th consecutive Save since the start of the season, setting another franchise record for the Mets. Across the seasons, this was already the 41st Regular Season Save in a row. On July 5, 2016, Familia was nominated for the National League squad for the 2016 MLB All-Star Game . On July 27, 2016, his series ended without a blown save in the 4-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals , in which he allowed two runs. At this point, Familia had achieved 52 regular season saves in a row, making it the third longest series in MLB history.

For the first 15 games of the 2017 season , Familia was banned by the MLB for violating the code of conduct. The background to this was a case of domestic violence. Three weeks after his suspension expired, Familia was out for another three months due to a shoulder injury. In total, he only came to 26 missions during the season. In 2018 , after 40 games for the Mets, Familia was traded to the Oakland Athletics , for which he came to another 30 appearances by the end of the season. In December 2018, Familia signed a new three-year contract with the Mets, for which he played in 66 games in 2019 . His ERA of 5.70 was the worst since his 2012 rookie season.
