Grzegorz Proksa (born November 23, 1984 in Mysłowice , Poland ) is a Polish professional boxer and a former two-time EBU European Middleweight Champion.

Amateur career

Proksa started boxing in 1999 and won the national tournament Dni Rudy Śląskiej (weight class 51 kg) that same year . In 2000 he won the tournaments Czarne Diamenty and Ciupagę Góralską (both in the Gk. 60 kg). In 2001 he became Polish Junior Lightweight Champion and again won the Czarne Diamenty tournament .

In 2002 he took part in the Julius Torma tournament . This is an international junior tournament that is held annually in the Czech capital, Prague . There he defeated the Czech local hero Pavel Dočkal in the final of the light welterweight division and won the gold medal. In 2002 he was also Polish runner-up in the junior light welterweight division. In October 2003 he started at the Václav Procházka tournament , which was also held in the Czech Republic, and won the silver medal in the light welterweight division. He lost to the Russian runner-up Ajdin Gasanov on points in the final.

Also in 2003, he became Polish Junior Champion and won the silver medal at the U-19 European Championship in Warsaw . He achieved both successes in the light welterweight division. In 2004 he became Polish welterweight champion and moved to the professional camp in early 2005.

According to his homepage, his amateur record amounts to 130 wins, ten losses and three draws.

Professional career

He played his first professional boxing match on March 5, 2005 in Las Vegas against the American Adam Capo and won through tKo in the first round. After four more victories he won through tKo in round 7 against the undefeated Belgian Kenneth Van Eesvelde, the junior world championship of the WBC and IBF in the middleweight division. He defended this against Ignacio Fraga and Vitalie Mirza. He also defeated three other opponents in non-title fights, including former IBO World Champion Steve Conway.

On October 12, 2007 he defeated Gotthard Hinteregger by technical knockout in the second round. After seven more victories, he boxed for the EBU's EU championship on February 12, 2010 . He defeated his British rival Tyan Booth by technical knockout in round five. Proksa had celebrated his 20th victory in the 20th fight, the 13th time prematurely. He boxed 15 times against opponents with a positive match record.

After five more knockout wins in a row, he acquired the right to box the vacant EBU European title in middleweight division. Former IBF world champion Sebastian Sylvester (34-4-1), who had lost his world title five months earlier to Daniel Geale just on points , was chosen as the opponent . On October 1, 2011, Proksa completely outclassed his opponent and won prematurely, as the heavily drawn New Year's Eve did not come out of his corner after the third round and the fight was therefore ended in Proksa's favor. In his first title defense, he lost the title against the British Kerry Hope on March 17, 2012 in Sheffield after a controversial point defeat. Proksa suffered a severely bleeding laceration over his left eye in the second round of the fight as a result of a headbutt.

On July 7th, 2012 he won the rematch against Hope through tKo in the eighth round and thus received the EBU title back. On September 1, 2012, he fought in New York against Gennady Golowkin for the world championship title of the WBA and IBO , but was defeated by tKo in round 5. In June 2013, he was also defeated on points against Sergio Mora . In November 2014 a premature loss to Maciej Sulęcki followed .
