Oskar Osala (born December 26, 1987 in Vaasa ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who was last under contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Continental Hockey League .

Career

Oskar Osala began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Vaasan Sport , for whose professional team he was active from 2003 to 2005 in the Mestis , the second Finnish division. He then played for two years for the Mississauga IceDogs in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the fourth round as a total of 97th player by the Washington Capitals . In the 2006/07 season he also ran twice for the Finnish U20 national team in the Mestis. In the following season he stayed in Finland and was runner-up with the Espoo Blues from the SM-liiga . As the best rookie in the SM-liiga, he also received the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy .

In the 2008/09 season , Osala played mainly for the Hershey Bears - the farm team of his draft team Washington Capitals - in the American Hockey League . With the Bears he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . He contributed to this success with 47 scorer points, of which 29 goals, in 97 games. He also made his debut for the Washington Capitals during the same season, for which he was on the ice in two games in the National Hockey League . After Osala had started the 2009/10 season with the Hershey Bears, he was transferred from Washington to the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2010 shortly before the end of the trade deadline . By the end of the season he came to another NHL assignment for Carolina, while he spent the rest of the time with their AHL farm team Albany River Rats . In the 2010/11 season he played for Carolina's new AHL farm team Charlotte Checkers .

In May 2011 he was committed by Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the Continental Hockey League . At Neftechimik he completed over 100 KHL games before he was given in December 2013 in exchange for Pawel Sdunow and a cash payment to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk . At the end of the 2013/2014 season , he won the KHL championship trophy , the Gagarin Cup, with Metallurg . Two years later he was able to repeat this success with Metallurg.

International

For Finland , Osala took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championship in 2005 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007 . At the 2007 U20 World Cup, he was the top scorer of the tournament with five goals tied with four other players. In the senior sector he was in his country's squad for the Euro Hockey Tour in 2008 and the 2010 World Cup .
