Tomás Martínez Guerrero (born December 21, 1820 in Nagarote , † March 12, 1873 in León , Nicaragua) was President of Nicaragua from 1857 to 1867 .

Life

Tomás Martínez was a businessman. When the war between the Partido Democrático (Liberal) and the Partido Legitimista (Conservador) began in 1854 , he became general of the Partido Legitimista ( Conservador ) army . After the defeat of the filibustiers around William Walker (mercenary) in 1857, Martínez was the most powerful military leader of the Partido Legitimista .

On January 23, 1857, Martínez agreed the Pacto Chanchagua with Máximo Jerez Tellería of the Partido Democrático (Liberal) . It was stipulated that from June 24, 1857 to November 15, 1857 Martínez and Jerez Tellería would be joint president in a duumvir .

On August 9, 1857, Martínez was appointed interim president of the Constituent Assembly that gave the 1858 constitution. From November 1857 to March 1, 1859 he was interim president and from March 1, 1859 he was president, according to the constitution of 1858. On April 15, 1858, during his tenure as interim president, the Tratado Cañas-Jerez was signed with Costa Rica . On May 28, 1858, the government of Tomás Martínez Guerrero issued special privileges for growing coffee. The cultivation of coffee and cotton was promoted by his government. Wells were drilled in Masaya Department under his reign . He resisted pressure from the US government to sign a contract on a future channel, but instead signed a contract with Costa Rica. which had the expansion of the Rio San Júan as a canal as its object, which was not realized.

He took office as constitutional president on March 1, 1859. During his tenure, diplomatic relations were established with the governments of various European countries, including the Holy See. The following departments were separated from the existing division: Chinandega (Departamento) and Chontales . Under his rule the port of Corinto was built.

Although this constitution expressly forbade the re-election of the president, he was elected to a second term in 1863. Thereupon there were riots by the Partido Democratico led by Máximo Jerez and by the Partido Legitimista led by Fernando Chamorro. Both uprisings were put down and he ruled the term until 1867.
