Fernando Guzmán

Fernando Guzmán Solórzano (born May 30, 1812 in Tipitapa , Nicaragua , † October 19, 1895 in Granada , Nicaragua) was a Nicaraguan politician of the Conservative Party and president of the country from 1867 to 1871 .

Life

At a time of considerable internal political tension, he managed to maintain the country's political and social stability. The freedom of the press was strictly upheld. Notable developments during his reign include: steam navigation on Lake Nicaragua and the Río San Juan, and a friendship agreement with the US on trade and shipping. He also expanded the cultivation of sugar cane and the production of refined sugar .
