Chinandega is a department in the far west of Nicaragua .
The capital of Chinandega is the city of the same name, Chinandega . The department has an area of 4,926 km² and a population of around 450,000 inhabitants (2006 calculation) , which corresponds to a population density of around 91 inhabitants / km².
Chinandega is characterized by agriculture - the main products are rum made from sugar cane as well as bananas and peanuts .
