Madriz is a department in Nicaragua on the border with Honduras .

The capital of Madriz is Somoto . The department has an area of ​​1,602 km² and a population of around 136,000 (2006 calculation) , which corresponds to a population density of around 85 inhabitants / km².

The department was named after the former President José Madriz (1867–1911).

economy

Economically, Madriz is characterized by coffee and grain cultivation.

In 2003, 74.6% of the population in Madriz were poor and 37.1% were extremely poor. 75% of the population lived on land affected by drought and deforestation , resulting in depletion of groundwater; in the basins of the rivers, erosion took away the possibilities of agricultural production. There is unemployment, unhealthy living conditions and malnutrition.
