Managua is one of a total of 15 departments in Nicaragua . The capital of the department is the eponymous city of Managua , which is also the capital of Nicaragua.

The area of ​​the department is 3,672 km² and has around 1.5 million inhabitants (2016 calculation) , which corresponds to a population density of around 432 inhabitants / km². It is the most populous department in Nicaragua.

Managua, in turn, is divided into nine municipalities :
