The Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte ( RACCN ; German Autonomous Region Northern Caribbean Coast , formerly Región Autónoma del Atlántico Norte , German Autonomous Region North Atlantic ) is one of two autonomous regions in eastern Nicaragua . They exist as an administrative unit alongside the 15 departments in Nicaragua. The two autonomous areas were created by a new constitution in 1987 and the subsequent division of the Zelaya department .

The capital of the region is Puerto Cabezas . The area is 32,195 km² with a population of around 390,670 inhabitants (2016 calculation) , which corresponds to a population density of around 14 inhabitants / km².

The Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte is in turn divided into eight municipalities :

  4. Rosita
  5. Siuna
  6. Waslala
  7. Waspán
  8. Mulukulú
