Siuna is a municipality in the department Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte in Nicaragua , the district capital is called Villa de Siuna.

history

According to the Ficha Municipal, Miskitos are musket- carrying Cimarrónes . The Sumu indigenas living in the Siuna area were supplied by traders from around 1900. Jose Aramburo had 1896 the first gold - claim in Siuna. In 1908 the first peaks in funding were reached. It was searched on the bank of the Río Siunawás river. In 1909 the La Luz SIUNA y Los Angeles Mining Company bought the gold mine. In the 1930s and 1940s, Canadian and US industrial mining companies set up and exploited gold and silver. The existing infrastructure of Siuna dates from this time. To separate the gold from the rock, mercury was used, which still contaminates parts of the rivers today. In the time of the Sandinista government from 1979 onwards, the mining companies were nationalized and closed in 1987.

Today there is a campus of the Universidad de las Regiones Autónomas de la Costa Caribe Nicaragüense (URACCAN) in Siuna.

Siuna is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Siuna , established in November 2017 .

The catchment area of ​​the Río Prinzapolka drains 60 percent of the area of ​​the municipality via the tributaries Río Uly, Río Danly, Río Wany, Río Labú, Río Silvy and Río Yaoya, the other part is the catchment area of ​​the Río Grande de Matagalpa with the tributaries Río Matis, Río Arenaloso, Río Iyas, Río Kum, Río Waspado, Río Lisawe, Río Waspuk, Río Iyas, Río Umbla and Río Tuma.
