Somoto is a city in northern Nicaragua , the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name and capital of the Madriz department .

The city is connected to Managua , 216 km away , via the Panamericana CA1 .

The name in Nahuatl , "Tecpecxomotli" means "mountain of geese". In the colonial times, the Cabildo was called in the Cédulas Reales : Santiago de Los Caballeros de Somoto Grande .

It is a market town in the highlands with a pleasant climate. The brothers Luis Enrique and Carlos Mejía Godoy , the local editor of La Prensa for Madriz, Marlon Caldera Balladárez and the football club Real Madriz , were born in Somoto .

Iglesia Santiago

The Iglesia Santiago was built from adobe bricks and broken stones. It houses, among others, a figure of Señor de los Milagros , a picture of Corazón de Jesús and a baptismal font from 1652 - as well as a black Christ on the cross. The current construction was started on September 9, 1661 by the carpenters Ángel Aguilar and Juan Vásquez. Mayor at that time was Guadalupe Rin.

"There is a three-aisled church at the site, the roof of which rests on 14 wooden pillars, an unadorned altar and a bell tower on four wooden piles that is covered with straw."

- Fray Agustín Morel de Santa Cruz, 1755
