José Madriz

José Madriz Rodríguez (born July 21, 1867 in León , Nicaragua , † May 14, 1911 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was a Nicaraguan politician of the Partido Liberal and president of the country from 1909 to 1910. Madríz was the Nicaraguan delegate to the Central American Court of Justice in Cartago, he sailed for Nicaragua on December 17, 1909 and took over the presidency. José Santos Zelaya , resigned December 21, 1909. Madriz was elected President by Parliament. The US Secretary of State Philander C. Knox had discontinued diplomatic relations with the Nota Knox . Madriz sent Dr. Modesto Barrios and Dr. Sebastian Salinas as envoy to Washington , but these were not received by the US government of William Howard Taft , the Madriz government was not recognized by it, and support for the insurgents of the Partido Conservador was continued.

Domestic political conflicts and the influence of the US government forced him to give up his office. He died in exile in Mexico City at the age of 44. His remains were returned to Nicaragua on November 29, 1965.

The Department of Madriz , created in 1936, bears his name.
