Corinto is a port city with 22,000 inhabitants (2005) on the northwestern Pacific coast of the Central American state of Nicaragua .

Geographical location
Corinto is located 150 km northwest of the capital Managua on the Pacific coast . It belongs to the Chinandega Department . Corinto lies on a peninsula and is connected to the mainland by two bridges.
history
The city was founded in 1863 and named after the Greek city of Corinth .
In March / April 1878, the city was occupied by a squadron of the Imperial Navy as part of the Eisenstuck affair .
In April 1895 Corinto was briefly occupied by a squadron of the Royal Navy . The background was a dispute between Great Britain and Nicaragua over Nicaraguan debt repayments.
During the Contra War in the 1980s, the port served as a point of contact for Cuban and Soviet merchant ships, after which the CIA mined the port in 1984 . On October 10, 1983, a CIA commando had attacked five oil tanks in the port, burning 3.2 million gallons of fuel.

Economy and Infrastructure
The most important industries are fishing and especially the port. The port of Corinto (Spanish: Puerto Corinto ) is by far the most important port in Nicaragua. About two thirds of all imports and exports in the country by sea go through this port (1,984,241 t in 2007).
