The list of cities in Nicaragua provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities and municipalities of the Central American state of Nicaragua .

Urban settlements by population

By far the largest agglomeration in Nicaragua is Managua with a population of 1,630,031 (as of January 1, 2005). This means that around 30 percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.

There are 153 municipalities ( Municipias ) in Nicaragua . The municipalities - the largest is Waspán with 9,341.71 square kilometers - partly have the area of ​​smaller German federal states (for comparison: Saarland 2,568.65 square kilometers). They usually consist of several localities. The administrative area often includes both the central, mostly urban settlement that gives it its name, as well as the surrounding greater region, i.e. extensive rural areas.

The following table shows the urban settlements with more than 10,000 inhabitants, the results of the population censuses (VZ) of April 20, 1971, April 25, 1995, May 28, 2005 and an estimate (S) for January 1, 2016 as well as the higher-level administrative unit ( Department and Autonomous Region) to which the city belongs. The population figures relate to the respective urban settlement in the narrower sense - the geographical urban area - not to the city or municipality in the political sense.
