Rivas is a department in Nicaragua , with the capital of the same name Rivas . The department has around 170,000 inhabitants (2006 calculation) and an area of 2,155 km².
The Rivas department is in turn divided into ten municipalities :
- Altagracia
- Belén
- Buenos Aires
- Cardenas
- Moyogalpa
- Potosí
- Rivas
- San Jorge
- San Juan del Sur
- Tola

The district is located in the south of Nicaragua and is bordered in the south by the border with Costa Rica , in the west by the Pacific Ocean and in the east by Lake Nicaragua .
Attractions
The administrative district is best known for its beaches such as the bay of San Juan del Sur on the Pacific Ocean and San Jorge on Lake Nicaragua and the volcanoes of Ometepe , the largest island in Lake Nicaragua .
