San Juan del Sur is a place in southwest Nicaragua , in the Rivas district . 17,104 people live in the entire administrative area, 7790 of them in the urban area and 9314 in the rural settlement area (2005). The city of Giessen maintains a partnership with San Juan del Sur.
The quiet fishing village is located in a horseshoe-shaped bay and attracts local and foreign tourists, mainly surfers from San Juan del Sur who drive a few kilometers north to Majagual to take advantage of the waves of the Pacific in the bay there. Many wealthy Nicaraguan families have their second homes here.
There are many restaurants on the beach promenade that specialize in seafood. There is a small market hall and numerous accommodations, buses go to Rivas and El Ostional.
history
In 1523, the Spaniard Andrés Niño arrived here in search of a gateway from Lake Nicaragua to the Pacific in the Bay of San Juan del Surs. Its port was of great importance in the middle of the 19th century during the gold rush in the USA.
The naval battle of San Juan del Sur took place in front of the port in 1856 .
Until the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, thousands of North Americans traveled to California , who took the ferry to the Central American isthmus and boarded the ferry to San Francisco in San Juan del Sur . Even Mark Twain crossed this place in years. 1866
In 2009, the 15-meter-high statue of Christ Cristo de la Misericordia was erected on the hills of the northern part of the bay .
