It is reported that Fray Pedro de Zepeda y Ahumada, a biological brother of St. Teresa of Ávila , was driven into the port of Realejo by a storm in 1562. This image was greatly admired by the population and so sadly said goodbye when de Zepeda y Ahumada wanted to sail on. However, another storm forced the ship to turn back, so Fray Pedro de Zepeda y Ahumada decided to leave the picture in El Viejo, which he saw as the will of God. So a place of pilgrimage was established. The jewelry that adorns the portrait is cleaned every December 6th as part of a devotional.
