Santiago

Santiago is the patron saint of numerous parishes in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan version of his legend is available in detail for Jinotepe , which is why an origin is assumed here. The variation of the Santiago legend in Jinotepe is that his image was swimming on Huehuete Beach. A storm has torn the ship from Santiago and San Sebastian. The shrines of the two were found around 1700 near Zanja de Ambar by two indigenous Salineros from Carazo, but the two could not take Santiago from his shrine. They took the boxes to the Loma de Bartolo, a rock, where they had their contents certified by a priest. The pictures remained in the shrines and were brought on ox carts to the nearest locations Diriamba and Jinotepe. When they tried in Diriamba to take the shrine with the image of Santiago from the cart, it turned out to be very heavy, while the shrine of San Sebastian was light as a feather. From this the transporters concluded that San Sebastina wanted to stay in Dirimba while they continued with Santiago to Jinotepe. The faithful in Diriamba call San Sebastian Guachán and worship him with a festival in mid-January.

San Sebastian Street Day

Santiago is venerated by numerous believers in Jinotepe. One of the highlights of the year is the festival on the occasion of the landing of the two patron saints on July 24th. After Mass, Santiago is carried on his shoulders to the Beneficio de Café Santa Rosa , where he meets San Marcos from the community of the same name . To set off fireworks and shouts of Viva Santiago , the two are carried to Dolores, the village which is halfway between Jinotepe and Diriamba. San Sebastián appears on time for the appointment, accompanied by the traditional dances: El Güegüense , Macho Ratón , El Toro Guaco , El Viejo y la Vieja , El baile del Gigante , Chago or Los Diablitos y las Inditas . The three saints meet in Dolores and enter the community on the shoulders of their porters, where the people have gathered in the Parque Central and in the churchyard to give them a warm welcome.

Hermitage

In 1739 the Hermitage , which stood at what is now the Banco Nacional de Desarrollo of Jinotope, was badly damaged by an eruption of the Volcan de Mombacho . In 1751, the bishop of the Diocese of Nicaragua Lic. Fray Pedro Agustín Morel de Santa Cruz visited the Hermitage on a trip through his diocese. The bishop had seen the hermitage, which was not destroyed, before. In 1811, Prior del Convento de Cartagena y caballero de la Cruz Isabel la Católica, Fray Nicolás García Jeréz visited the Hermitage. At that time, the first uprisings that led to the solution of Spain in 1821 appeared, especially in Leon. In 1852 the Hermitage was shaken by an earthquake. It was used by the Municipalidad until 1976, when Rentas de Carazo was demolished to build the Banco Nacional building.

Parish Church of Santiago Apóstol

In 1820, Bishop García Jeréz said that there was a custom in Spain for authorities to make significant contributions to the building of churches. The quarter de Xinotepet was then four leguas long. The Cabildo de Españoles and the Cabildo de Indios together represented 5,200 souls, two priests a congrua of 900 pesos and two reales. (1 peso = 8 reales). During the negotiations on the building of the church, the chairman of the Cabildo de Indios suggested that the lime should be burned in ovens on the river at a place called Cabecera de don Gaspar , that the workers provided by the Cabildo de Indios should be fed and that the slaughtered cattle should be locally produced would originate. It was started to transport lime free of charge. The architect Felipe Granera from León (Nicaragua) planned and his bricklayers were responsible for the construction. The construction was financed by wealthy local citizens, and community officials were employed on the construction on a weekly basis. Part of the facing of the church consists of volcanic slag, which at the time was carried out by indigenous people from a distance of 20 kilometers. The water was drawn from springs on the northern edge of the municipality near Chaliapa.
