Estelí is a city in the north of the Central American state of Nicaragua and the capital of the department of the same name . It is located 148 km north of Managua on the Panamericana in the central highlands at an altitude of about 840 m and is surrounded by mountains up to 1600 m. In pre-Columbian times, the area was settled by the Chorotegas, who called the area Estelí (i.e. blood flow). The city of Estelí was probably founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and is now an administrative and economic center. The tobacco industry , especially cigar production , and tourism are also important - Estelí has ​​numerous language schools .

The data on the number of inhabitants vary widely in different sources, it is 107,458, the city extends over an area of ​​754 km². For the entire department the population is estimated at 201,548 (05/2005).

Estelí is the seat of the Estelí diocese , whose patroness is the Virgen del Rosario (Rosary Virgin = Mary ).
