Claribel Alegría (born May 12, 1924 in Estelí , Nicaragua , † January 25, 2018 in Managua ) was a Nicaraguan writer . Her work has so far been translated into 14 languages.

Life

Claribel Alegría was the daughter of a Nicaraguan and a Salvadoran. She grew up in Santa Ana , a city in western El Salvador , and therefore saw herself as a Salvadoran. In 1932, at the age of eight, she experienced La Matanza , an ethnocide in which around 30,000 landless and indigenous people died.

After attending school in Santa Ana, Alegría went to the United States in 1943 and studied at George Washington University in Washington, DC in 1948, she completed her studies with a Magister Artium. Between 1944 and 1947, Juan Ramón Jiménez was her mentor.

Claribel Alegría was married to the American writer Darwin J. Flakoll until his death in 1995 . The couple had four children together. The family lived for a long time in the USA and in several European countries. In 1985 Alegría returned to Nicaragua with her husband to support the social consolidation after the civil war and to represent non-violence. Claribel Alegría died on January 25, 2018 in Managua at the age of 93
