Chontales is a department in Nicaragua on Lake Nicaragua .
The capital of Chontales is Juigalpa . The department has an area of 6,378 km² and a population of around 186,000 inhabitants (2006 calculation) , which corresponds to a population density of around 29 inhabitants / km².
Chontales is characterized by agriculture - the main products are rubber , precious wood , rice and citrus fruits .
The Chontales department is in turn divided into 10 municipalities :
