Juigalpa is the capital of the Chontales department in Nicaragua . It is connected to Managua , 139 kilometers away , via the Carretera Rama ( Boaco - San Miguelito ) .
geography
Juigalpa lies at the foot of the Serranías de Amerrisque , which are the watershed between Lago de Nicaragua and the Atlantic. The carretera runs through the deepest part of Juigalpa. Some of the hills have a view of the Serranías de Amerrisque . Juigalpa has 20 comarcas (districts).
history
In Nahuat, juigalpa means thick pumpkin or nest of black snails . In 1659 Juigalpa was named in the application for the allocation of an ejidos , the Alcaldes Jerónimo de Villegas to the Presidente de la Audiencia de Guatemala , Sebastián Álvarez Alfonso Rosica de Caldas (1666-1671). On April 24, 1668 the ejido was assigned. In 1752 Juigalpa de la Asunción was a village with a Cabildo de Indios , a Cabildo de Españoles , with 34 farms, 224 people and a milicia . On February 4, 1862, Juigalpa was upgraded to a villa (town).
The constituent assembly of the Partido Legitimista (PL) (Conservador) in Granada (Nicaragua) stipulated by law in December 1833 that Nicaragua would be divided into three departments, according to which Chontales was part of Granada. On June 11, 1877, Juigalpa became the capital of the Chontales department, for which Acoyapa had also applied. In 1935 the Departamento Boaco was spun off from Departamento Chontales . 1949 was spun off from Chontales Department, Río San Juan Department .
In 1962, the Roman Catholic diocese of Juigalpa was established in the city . The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Cathedral was built between 1966 and 1996.

Fiesta Patronal
The Fiesta Patronal on Assumption of Mary is celebrated in the week of August 15th. Much of this celebration takes place in the Plaza de Toros in the city center. Bull rides take place here and about five people die each year from injuries. That's why it's a good holiday when nobody dies. As Mayor Domus partially acts the Alcaldia , and the Fundacion Para La Promocion y el Desarrollo (PRODESA) loads on their property in the western city.

traffic
The city is a land transport station in eastern Nicaragua. The bus connection from Managua goes from the Mercado Mayoreo and has a travel time of about three hours or two with the express bus. There are also charter helicopters from Managua. Within the city, taxis are the predominant mode of transport.
economy
In the Chontales department, 90% of the beef is produced in Nicaragua. Casey B. Welch came to Juigalpa with the United States Peace Corps in 2001, and has since run a beef jerky company in Juigalpa.
