San Miguelito (Nicaragua)
San Miguelito is a city in southern Nicaragua . It is located in the Río San Juan department on the east bank of Lake Nicaragua , near the border with Costa Rica. The population was 2,807 in the city area at the 2005 census and 17,031 in the whole municipality. In the administrative district of Rio San Juan it is the third largest city after San Carlos and El Castillo . The area of the municipality is 1,096 square kilometers. The population density is 16 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Geography and the townscape
The Río San Juan , after which the department is named, forms the connection between the Atlantic and Lake Nicaragua. Not far from San Miguelito is a rainforest reserve. The Solentiname archipelago is a two-hour boat ride away.
The approximately 17,000 inhabitants of the municipality live in a small, historic town center that stretches up the hill from the lake shore. In addition to the town center with its church and fountain, the mayor's office painted in yellow and the new health center, the main town's image also includes many houses made of sheet metal, boards and plastic tarpaulin along unpaved roads that sink into the mud during the rainy season. The urban area also includes 32 surrounding villages and hamlets ( comarcas ).

Economy and Infrastructure
In Nicaragua as well as in the region of San Miguelito, people live mainly from agriculture. Most families are poor but have children. Many residents of the community seek a livelihood in Costa Rica to support their families who are back home financially.
Nature reserves
City partnership with Waltrop
Since 1988 there has been a town partnership between San Miguelito and Waltrop . The impetus for this was provided by the association “Solidaridad - City Partnership Waltrop San Miguelito eV”. The name of the association means "solidarity".
