Overlooking San Carlos from Nicaragua from |
San Carlos is the capital of the administrative district ( Departamento ) Río San Juan in Nicaragua , the smallest administrative district in the country by inhabitants.
The city, founded by the Spanish in 1550 as a trading post, is located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua at the outflow of the lake, the Río San Juan , the border with Costa Rica . The city is named after its patron saint Karl Borromeo . The population was 12,174 in the city at the 2005 census and 37,461 in the whole municipality. About 30% of the residents of the administrative district live in the small town, which is the regional trading center and the seat of state authorities and international aid organizations.
Economy and Infrastructure
There is a sea-side liner connection to Granada , and San Carlos is the starting point for ship connections across the Río San Juan and to the offshore islands of Solentiname . A state and a private hospital are part of the medical care. There is also a small university project, the Universidad Paulo Freire (UPF), formerly UPONIC, comparable to a university of applied sciences ; in 2005 it had about 260 students.
There are flight connections to other Nicaraguan cities from San Carlos Airport .
Town twinning
After the Nicaraguan Revolution in 1979, the center of the underdeveloped region became the target of numerous solidarity movements in Europe, but also in the USA . Many of these initiatives resulted in town twinning and town friendships, some of which still exist today, e.g. B. with:
Germany: Nuremberg , Waltrop , Witten , Erlangen , Schwabach
Netherlands: Groningen
Italy: Emilia-Romagna , Bologna
USA: San Carlos (California) , Honolulu , Hawaii , South Bend (Indiana) , Haven (Massachusetts) , San Francisco
