Roman bridge in Ilidža
The Roman Bridge in Ilidža ( Serbo-Croatian Rimski Most na Ilidži / Римски мост на Илиџи ) is a stone bridge over the Bosna in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The arched bridge is located east of the village of Plandište in the municipality of Ilidža in the Bosnian canton of Sarajevo , about 12 kilometers west of the city center of Sarajevo near the Bosna spring and not far from the M17 highway . It is a listed building .
history
Between 1530 and 1550 the "Roman Bridge" was built as part of the trade route from Sarajevo to Mostar as one of six stone bridges in the vicinity of Sarajevo. The current Ottoman bridge was built on the remains of a former Roman bridge that connected the Aquae Sulphurae settlement . Material from Roman ruins from the area was used to build the bridge. The architect of the bridge can no longer be reliably understood today. However, since the bridge over the Željeznica, which was about the same old, was almost identical, it is assumed that both bridges were built by Rustem Paša Hrvat . The renovation was commissioned by Gazi Ali Paša . In 1762 the bridge was renovated.
architecture
The bridge made of stone blocks is 40 meters long, 4.5 meters wide and crosses the Bosna in seven arches. At the highest point it is 4.5 meters high. It is closed to motorized traffic.
