Life

Kikić attended the elementary school in Gradačac, which he did not graduate until the age of 13, and then from 1919 to 1922 the higher school for boys in Derventa . He was expelled from the teacher training college in 1926 for participating in a school strike. He passed his matriculation examination in Zagreb and became a teacher in Hajdarovići , Rogatica and Ustiprača . In Gornji Sjeničak and in Pisarovina he was head of the primary schools. Kikić began an extraordinary study of law at the University of Belgrade , which he graduated in 1938. In 1940 he became a legal adviser in Zagreb. During the Second World War he was initially a reserve officer and captain in the Landwehr. In 1942 he then joined the partisans , where he was battalion commander. After a short time he fell in battle.

Works

Kikić, who was unsteady and always struggling for his own existence, was literarily shaped by Miroslav Krleža . In his novels and stories he described the world of the Muslim Bosnians, their needs and sufferings. To a mainly Christian Croatian audience, he did not show the Bosnians as the ruling class (as the Muslims in Bosnia were mainly perceived as), but the difficult life of the common people and the village proletariat. In Provincija u pozadini (province in the background) he vividly describes the social contrasts in Bosnia during the time of Austrian rule 1878–1918. The novel Ho-ruk is about forest workers, the novel Bukve describes the conditions of the poor people in the Bosnian village.
