meebo was a Pidgin- based client-side instant messaging application based on Ajax and merged accounts from AOL Instant Messenger , ICQ , Yahoo Messenger , Windows Live Messenger , XMPP , Myspace IM and Google Talk on one messenger-style page.

history

meebo was founded by three young entrepreneurs, started for private use on September 4th, 2005 and made available to the public on September 14th, 2005. On December 16, 2005, it was confirmed that meebo had received funding from Sequoia Capital . On June 4, 2012, meebo was taken over by Google Inc. In preparation for the official sale, 90% of the employees in the New York office had been laid off immediately (number of employees around 200 in mid-2011). As a result of the takeover on July 11, 2012, all services except for the Meebo Bar , a browser add-on , were discontinued. At the end of April 2013, it was announced by Google and on the Meebo website that on June 6, 2013, the Meebo Bar, the last remaining Meebo product, will be discontinued. About 20 of the former 200 Meebo employees switched to Google to work on the development of Google+ services.

features

By passing on the access data, the data traffic of several services could be processed via the meebo page. meebo supported the ability to log on to a server invisibly and to get in contact with several services.

meebo had integrated an extension on February 16, 2006, which made it possible to create meebo user accounts. This enabled the user to use several instant messaging services with just one login . Since May 4, 2006, meebo also had the ability to access message histories for meebo accounts. Meebo integrated this function shortly after Google .

On March 19, 2006, meebo was expanded to include send and receive signal tones, as well as the ability to send messages to users who do not appear in the contact list. meebo made it possible to use these services without downloading and installing messenger programs, which made it easier to access contact lists and message histories.

Some company and school firewalls prevented access to meebo for employees and students. For this reason, meebo published the meebo repeater on May 19, 2006 , a program that allowed users to set up their own proxy on a Windows PC in order to still be able to use meebo.

Since September 10, 2007 there was another function: the option of file transfer was offered. Since then it has been possible for registered meebo users to send files to others. The file was loaded onto the meebo server. However, the recipient did not need a meebo account, they only received an Internet address where they could download the file.

Since October 18, 2007, a Firefox extension was also available that integrated a sidebar that displayed the contacts and their status.

At the beginning of 2009, meebo published a beta version of the meebo notifier, a program which, if requested, automatically logged on with a meebo ID when the operating system was started. As soon as a message arrived, the program showed a preview of the message with a pop-up from the system tray and opened the meebo page by clicking on the system tray icon.

meebo offered registered users the option of logging in via Jabber . Login name was benutzer@meebo.org. However, only the contacts belonging to the meebo account were available in the contact list, transports were not offered.

meebo on the smartphone

Since November 6th, 2008 there has been a meebo application for the Android operating system which u. a. found on many HTC , Acer , Huawei , LG , Samsung and Motorola smartphones as well as on the Google Phone Nexus One . The meebo application can be downloaded free of charge from the Google Play Store.

On February 15, 2010, a meebo application for the Apple iPhone was released . You could use the "Push Notification" function available from OS 3.0, which made it possible to draw attention to new messages even though the application was not active.
