The AOL Instant Messenger ( AIM ) was an instant messaging - service company AOL . The service used the OSCAR protocol, which was also used by ICQ . It was shut down on December 15, 2017.

With the AIM it was also possible for non-AOL customers to have an AOL e-mail address as well as to move around in open AOL chat rooms. Large parts of the AOL chat rooms are, however, reserved exclusively for AOL members. It was also possible to communicate with ICQ users. With the AIM user identification it was also possible to communicate with AIM users via firewalls in the Internet from large company networks in which Lotus Sametime is used internally .

AOL, which until 2010 also belonged to ICQ, was awarded a US software patent on instant messaging in September 2002. In October 2017, AOL announced that it would discontinue Instant Messenger on December 15, 2017.

history

When the AOL software was introduced in Germany, there was already the instant message function, which was called Telegram in Germany , and chat rooms of various sizes. Soon this was expanded to include the buddy list , with which you could always see which other AOL users (from the circle of buddies) are online. Finally, as an extension, the AIM function was added with its own free software that made it possible for the first time to use the functions described both with AOL members and with AIM users who are not AOL members.

The service was finally switched off on December 15, 2017. In 2019, the service was made usable again via Phoenix Aim .

Functions of the AIM

An important function of the AIM is the buddy list. With the buddy list you can see whether friends are online and write to them.

AIM offers the possibility of having a live conversation with one person, of chatting with several people in private and public rooms and of exchanging files (for example pictures, sounds and videos). The AIM assistant notifies the user immediately when friends go online.

The functions also include a news ticker and a stock market ticker.

In addition, you will immediately receive a notification when you receive a new email if you are an AOL customer.

Some offline messages are also possible with AIM.

Clients

The AOL Terms of Use explicitly prohibit the creation and use of alternative clients to interact with the services provided, but take place anyway. In addition to the official client, there are compatible third-party clients. Most of them are open source software and support other protocols besides the AIM protocol such as B. ICQ, MSN, IRC and XMPP.
