Google Talk was an instant messaging - service and an associated software client that Google Inc. developed.

It enabled Gmail users to communicate in real time through text messages or voice. Google Talk is based on the XMPP protocol, which was developed by the XMPP Standards Foundation as an open instant messaging protocol and expanded by Google to include the VoIP functionality under the name Jingle . Therefore, the service could be used with any other XMPP clients in addition to the official client program.

Google Talk could be used with a wide range of operating systems until it was replaced by Google Hangouts in 2013 .

As a platform, Google Talk could be used in GMail Chats, with other XMPP clients or via Talk's Android app until June 26, 2017. The Google Talk function is now available in Hangouts.

history

The introduction was preceded by speculation; Google advertised for the position of a VoIP expert in January 2005 and shortly before the service was introduced on August 24, 2005, many Internet forums reported that an XMPP server on talk.google.com and the XMPP standard port 5222 was using an XMPP-typical denial to login attempts.

Since January 17, 2006, Google Talk has been expanded to include the ability to connect to other XMPP servers and now allows communication between XMPP and Google Talk users. Therefore it was also possible to communicate with users of providers such as GMX , Web.de , EarthLink , Gizmo5 , Tiscali , NetEase , Chikka , MediaRing . Google also planned to implement cross-network communication with users of external messaging services in their clients, which was initially limited to AIM .

In June 2012, Google announced that it would merge Google Talk with Google Hangouts and Google+ Messenger in order to reduce the fragmentation of their products. XMPP support ended in May 2013. On June 27, 2017, the service was closed with the migration of users to Hangouts.
