The Yahoo Messenger (own letters Yahoo! Messenger , shortly also ! Y M , YIM and Yim ) was a free instant messaging - service company Yahoo . The associated software was offered free of charge and could be downloaded and installed with a valid Yahoo account. The functions of Yahoo Messenger were very similar to those of ICQ , AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger , but they were not compatible with each other. Microsoft and Yahoo had meanwhile decided to merge their IM services. From version 8 of Yahoo Messenger on , at least text messages could be exchanged with Windows Live Messenger until this cooperation was switched off again in the course of the switch from Windows Live Messenger to Skype 2012.

The Yahoo Messenger was for the operating systems Windows , macOS , Android and iOS available. There are only outdated versions for Linux and Solaris . Alternatively, a client called Gyachi could be used for Linux , although this has not been updated since 2007.

In addition to text messages, the software also offered voice calls, webcams, games, and photo sharing. However, some functions were only supported by the Windows version.

On June 8, 2018, Yahoo announced that the messenger service would be discontinued on July 17 due to the constantly changing communications landscape. There was no direct successor. Users can request their chat history to download until the end of November 2018.

According to Nielsen NetRatings in January 2006, the number of European Yahoo Messenger users was 4.65 million. The service was used an average of 13.6 times per month. On average, European users spent two hours and 15 minutes a month with Yahoo Messenger .
