Yahoo Mail (own spelling Yahoo! Mail ) is a free, advertising-financed e-mail service from the Internet service provider Yahoo . In addition to the offers from Google and Outlook.com, it is one of the most widely used freemail services worldwide.

user interface

After the beta phase of a new interface started in 2004, the final version was gradually activated from October 2007. Thanks to the use of AJAX, it allowed a use that is otherwise only offered by locally installed e-mail clients (for example dragging and dropping , and thanks to registers you can read and write several e-mails at the same time). Similar to Gmail , the focus was on not deleting old emails and, if necessary, on finding the message quickly using the integrated search function. Support for Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox is sought. It was also possible to use it with Opera , apart from a few restrictions. Apple's Apple Safari browser was not supported, however.

It was to be expected as early as 2007 that other services from Yahoo! should be summarized under this surface. Parts of “ Yahoo Calendar ” and the “Yahoo Address Book” are already integrated. In December 2012, Yahoo met these expectations and carried out the last major revision of Yahoo Mail: This time, the developers put their focus particularly on ease of use ( usability ) and a uniform appearance across all operating systems . Experts see the relaunch as an effort to stop the migration of users to GMail.

Services

In May 2007, for its tenth anniversary, Yahoo Mail changed the previous mailbox limit of 1 GB in favor of unlimited storage. The free, advertising-financed offer includes virus and spam protection (including DomainKeys ), but the size of file attachments is limited to 25 MB. The mailbox can be accessed from an e-mail program using the POP3 and SMTP protocols . At the end of 2013, the storage space was limited to one terabyte , parallel to that of the Yahoo subsidiary Flickr .

Disposable addresses

In the spam settings there is the "Disposable addresses" area, in which any number of so-called disposable e-mail addresses can be set up. Similar to the spam protection service Sneakemail , these e-mail addresses can be given, for example, when registering in forums or on the websites of companies that are suspected of being spam. E-mail messages sent to these disposable addresses end up in the inbox of the Yahoo Mail inbox along with normal mail.

The throw-away addresses follow the pattern basisname-portalxy@yahoo.de . The base name must be defined once before the disposable addresses can be used. All disposable addresses then have the same base name. The base name is different from the Yahoo! username.

The portalxy part can consist of letters and numbers and can e.g. B. contain the name of the forum or website for which you want to use the respective throw-away address. For example, you can set up the disposable address basisname-ebayauktionen@yahoo.de to register with eBay and use it for the Heise forum basisname-heiseonline@yahoo.de .

Should you ever receive spam at one of these e-mail addresses, you can delete the corresponding throw-away address; further e-mails to this address will then simply be discarded because the recipient does not exist. On the one hand, you don't have to update the contact email address wherever you have used such an email address, as would be the case if you had to change your normal email address due to a flood of spam. On the other hand, with consistent use, you can see by whom or from what point your own email address may have been "resold" or otherwise passed on.

criticism

In July 2013, Yahoo Mail came under fire after a change in its terms and conditions was announced. It allows the company to automatically analyze all messages from users, as is done with Google Mail . Yahoo! justified the incision in the privacy of users with the need to offer appropriate advertising. In August 2018, the Yahoo! criticized again in the media. Around 200 million Yahoo inboxes are said to have been automatically analyzed by the e-mail provider.
