Freemail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freemail means the free offer of an e-mail address and an e-mail mailbox for sending and receiving e-mails (electronic letters) by an e-mail provider . Such services are usually financed by freemail providers through advertising or additional functions that are provided for a fee.

In addition to a website through which e-mails can be viewed and sent ( webmail ), users are usually also allowed to handle e-mail traffic via e-mail programs ; At least no advertising is displayed in the user interface. With some providers, however, user intervention is required to activate access via the POP3 and IMAP protocols , because this access is deactivated in the standard setting.

Many providers require their users to log in via the web interface of the e-mail service at certain intervals, otherwise the e-mail address will be deactivated. The users must see the advertising on the provider's website, which is not the case when using an email program (with the exception of advertising emails sent by the provider). In addition, unused e-mail addresses can be deactivated and then released for other users.

Comparison of providers

This table only lists the freemail offers from well-known providers in German-speaking countries. Additional services that are subject to a fee are not discussed here.

Remarks
  1. Since the registration form transmitted via HTTPS is integrated as an inline frame into a page transmitted via HTTP, a man-in-the-middle can display another form and spy out the login data entered there. A secure registration would be possible via https://www.freenet.de/index.html , but the layout of the page is severely impaired by the stylesheet that does not load there (as of January 17, 2016).
  2. Although email addresses with a suffix (plus addressing) do not contradict the RFC 3696 standard, addresses with "+" are incorrectly not recognized by some website operators and can therefore only be used to a limited extent.
  3. Completely encrypted (SSL / HTTPS ), provided that the relevant option has been activated in the settings or the page is accessed via https: //.
  4. 2 addresses with gmx domains, 20 addresses with GMX so-called "fun" domains
  5. a b c d The login data entered are sent via a secure HTTPS connection regardless of the encryption of the login page.
  6. if you call up the page via https: //, otherwise unencrypted.
  7. With T-Online you can send e-mail attachments with 32 MB, but receive with 50 MB.
  8. The login page is not encrypted. Note: with T-Online the portal is not encrypted - login is.
  9. a b c Beta function, available immediately for new customers
