mail.de is a provider of secure e-mail services founded in 2009 with headquarters in Nordhastedt and a business office in Gütersloh . There the webmailer is programmed and the systems are administered.

mail.de initially started as an advertising-free, paid service. In 2012, an advertising-financed freemail tariff was added to the portfolio. Mail.de won the Öko-Check as the most sustainable e-mail provider.

safety

All protocols (HTTP, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, WebDAV, Jabber) have been available in encrypted form since the service was started. With the compulsion of HTTPS, for example, mail.de was one of the pioneers in the e-mail sector in 2010. In July 2013, in a test by 15 major providers, mail.de was the only e-mail provider alongside Freenet and Arcor that supported transport encryption for server-to-server communication.

In its 4/2014 issue, c't magazine rated mail.de as one of 16 providers in a security test as the best and most secure FreeMail provider. The provider signs all outgoing emails with a DKIM signature.

Since 2012, mail.de has been the first webmailer in Germany to offer registration using two-factor authentication . The username can differ from the publicly known e-mail address. There is also the password and the six-digit code from the mail.de authenticator, a smartphone app that corresponds to the time-controlled one-time password ( TOTP standard ).

mail.de is the third email provider worldwide that supports DANE / TLSA (DNS-based Authentication of Name Entries) with the services SMTP, HTTPS, IMAP, POP3 and Jabber and thus avoids some weaknesses of the SSL / TLS transport route encryption .

The data center is located in Hamburg at IPHH.

The Perfect Forward Secrecy technology is used with all protocols, so that each encrypted connection uses its own session key. This prevents all recorded connections from being decrypted afterwards by cracking the SSL key.

mail.de is the first e-mail provider to offer its customers to publish their public PGP keys via OPENPGPKEY in the DNSSEC-secured domain. Since March 2016, it has also been possible to publish S / MIME keys via SMIMEA.

Products

The focus of mail.de lies in the provision of free, advertising-financed FreeMail mailboxes as well as advertising-free premium mailboxes.

There are differences u. a. in the number of possible alias addresses, the transfer volume (data traffic) and the payment and term conditions. IMAP is also available in the FreeMail package.

A major difference to some comparable services of the competitors is the requirement for the consent of the customer to use his login data not only by the email provider himself (on behalf of his advertising customers), but also by his advertising partner directly with FreeMail accounts.

In May 2017, mail.de GmbH started its service in Switzerland under mail.ch, in August 2017 in the United Kingdom under mail.co.uk and in France under mail.fr. In these three countries, anonymous registration is only possible using an email address and password.
