Nielsen NetRatings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nielsen NetRatings is an internet tracking service (online panel) of the media and information group The Nielsen Company , which provides surveys on audience, advertisers and both online activities on a global basis and around 90% of worldwide online activities in measures about 30 countries.

Nielsen NetRatings is used as a planning and control tool for the use of websites. The online panel was originally a joint service of the market research company ACNielsen and the technology company NetRatings Inc. (subsidiary of Nielsen Media Research ) to monitor user and advertising activities on the Internet, which was also introduced in Germany in the course of 2000.

The joint venture was called ACNielsen eRating.com and competed with:

  • Jupiter MMXI (joint venture between Jupiter Media Metrix, USA and the European market research companies GfK AG , Ipsos SA and the Observer Group , started in 1999)
  • NetValue (subsidiary of NetValue SA France, started 1999)

ACNielsen and Nielsen Media Research were both originally part of the company founded by Arthur C. Nielsen , but were spun off as two separate companies in 1996 as a result of a restructuring of their future parent company, Dun & Bradstreet. In October 1999, Nielsen Media Research was taken over by VNU. With the acquisition of Nielsen Media Research, VNU also became the majority owner of NetRatings Inc.

2001 wanted ACNielsen eRating.com to take over competitor Jupiter MMXI for $ 71.2 million. The merger failed due to resistance from the US antitrust authorities. Jupiter Media Metrix then withdrew from Europe, the Jupiter MMXI joint venture was dissolved and the German branch in Nuremberg was completely closed. ACNielsen eRatings.com took over the customer list and a patent on online panel measurement processes.

Following the takeover of ACNielsen by the VNU Group, in May 2002 the US advertising statistics service NetRatings Inc., which specializes in the Internet and which had already held a 19.9% stake, became the wholly owned owner of ACNielsen eRatings.com , shares in ACNielsen for $ 9.6 million. Nielsen NetRatings was chosen as the new name .

After taking over the competitor NetValue in 2002, Nielsen NetRatings became the only provider and a monopoly was created in online reach measurement. This no longer exists due to competitors such as comScore .
