Comscore ( spelling : comScore ) is an American international Internet market research company that publishes regular reports on Internet usage .

Comscore Networks was founded in August 1999 in Reston, Virginia by Gian Fulgoni and Magid Abraham. Gian Fulgoni was CEO of Information Resources, one of the largest market research companies in the world , for many years . Magid Abraham was President of the IRI in the mid-1990s .

Gian Fulgoni and Magid Abraham had the idea of ​​founding a company when they and Mike Santer, an investor, were considering a concept for setting up a large online customer panel for market research in the field of e-commerce . Conventional ways of tracking customer behavior on the Internet could only poorly be transferred to the much less frequent online purchases (2–3%). To achieve their goal of building a large enough panel, they conducted an aggressive, multi-million dollar, ten-year recruitment process. Any errors that occur should be eliminated using sophisticated statistical methods.

In 2000 Comscore bought various areas and customers of PCData, one of the first market research companies specializing in the WWW . While PCData faced an uncertain future due to changes in competition and patent infringements (lawsuit by Media Metrix), Comscore was able to gain more precise data thanks to their now large customer base.

By 2001, Media Metrix had become the market leader, but was unable to create a stable financial base. Media Metrix's fiercest competitor, NetRatings , had raised major capital reserves and announced that it would take over and integrate the company. After the American FTC (comparable to the Federal Cartel Office) banned the takeover, NetRatings deviated from its plans. In June 2002 Comscore finally took over the company.

On March 30, 2007, Comscore announced its intention to go public (NASDAQ, symbol: SCOR).

criticism

With its investigations, the company competes against the AGOF study “internet facts”. In its home market, the USA, the company was under pressure because the industry association IAB had asked both Comscore and its competitor Nielsen Netratings to disclose the survey methods due to the widely differing coverage figures.

The numbers determined by Comscore for visits to the MySpace and Yahoo websites were very controversial in the fourth quarter of 2006. Nielsen Netratings provided different figures in this analysis.
