The Nexus 7 (2012) is the first generation of a product line of tablet computers , which was presented by Google together with the Android version 4.1 Jelly Bean on June 27, 2012. It was the first device with Android 4.1 and the flagship device of this Android version. It was built by Asus and is the first tablet in the Nexus series . With an introductory price of 199 US dollars , it was computer tablet as a competitor and Google's response to the Kindle Fire from Amazon viewed. Since the start of sales at the end of August 2012, Google has sold around 2.8 million devices worldwide in three months. From January to mid-April 2013, Asus produced twelve million devices and delivered them to Google.

The successor is the Nexus 7 (2013) .

history

The Nexus 7 was presented together with the Android version 4.1 Jelly Bean on June 27, 2012 at the Google I / O in San Francisco. In mid-July 2012, the Nexus 7 was shipped to customers in Australia, the USA, Canada and the UK. Sales started on Google Play in Germany, France and Spain on August 27, 2012. The Nexus 7 was also available through regular stores in Germany from September 3 and in Austria from September 10.

Back of the Nexus 7

After the release of the Nexus 7, Google has continuously released new operating system versions, with which frequently requested functions are upgraded. This includes, for example, the presentation of the start screen in landscape format , which has been available since the beginning of October.

On October 29, 2012, Google presented a revised Nexus 7 with 32 GB flash memory, while the 8 GB version was rejected. A UMTS version has been available since November 13, 2012. You cannot use it to make calls.

Since November 13, 2012, Google distributed an operating system update to Android 4.2. Downloading and installation are possible over the air , i.e. without a cable connection to another device.

Since July 2013, Google has also been distributing the Android 4.3 version. Associated with this was the introduction of the so-called TRIM process, which informs the SSD / eMMC controllers that memory blocks are free and thus improves the data throughput of the device, especially after frequent deletion of large amounts of data.

Currently (May 2015) Android 5.1.1 is available. Updates to newer Android versions are no longer provided by Google, official support ended in June 2015.

technology

The Nexus 7 is based on the Asus MeMO ME370T ; many aspects were changed during the four months of development. The Nexus 7 is the first 7 "tablet to feature an Nvidia Tegra 3 (quad-core processor with 1.3 GHz clock rate). An Nvidia GeForce ULP with twelve cores clocked at 416 MHz is used as the graphics processor sufficient to smoothly display games with 1280 × 800 pixels.

Reviews

Critics praised the high performance, the processing quality, the long battery life and the support of NFC . However, the lack of an SD card slot, the HDMI output and initially the lack of connection to the public mobile network were criticized . Since mid-November 2012, however, there has also been a version with mobile communications.

After the update to Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop), complaints about very delayed responses to inputs and touch increased.
