particularities

The Nexus 4 (LG E960) is a smartphone from the Nexus series from Google . It was created together with the Korean partner LG . The Nexus 4 was presented to the public on October 29, 2012 and was initially shipped with the Android version 4.2 Jelly Bean since November 13, 2012 . It is the fourth device in the Nexus series and the successor to the Galaxy Nexus . The device was available with both a black and a white back.

Furnishing

The Nexus 4 is 133.9 mm long, 68.7 mm wide and 9.1 mm thick, weighs 139 grams and has a screen diagonal of around 119 mm (4.7 inches) with a point density of around 125 px / cm (320 ppi) and a resolution of 1280 × 768 pixels. Instead of physical buttons, the navigation keys are shown on the display ("softkeys"), which means that before the introduction of full-screen mode ("immersive mode", from Android 4.4), less display space was available. The Nexus 4 is the first Android smartphone that can be charged by induction. LG relies on the Qi standard . This means that chargers from other manufacturers can also be used. The battery has a capacity of 2,100 mAh. The device has a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor of the Snapdragon S4 Pro type and 2 GB of RAM . It has NFC aka Android Beam , an 8 megapixel - rear camera , the new Android-function photo spheres which spherical panoramas can create, support, and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. In addition, an Adreno 320 GPU works inside the Nexus 4 for computing graphic elements. The smartphone supports both GPS and GLONASS satellites.

Android 6 (Marshmallow) was no longer announced because the device was too old according to Google's usual practice, but custom ROMs such as LineageOS now already offer Android 8.1 for the device.

Availability

Shortly after the start of sales, the Nexus 4 was sold out in regional Play Stores around the world , in Germany even after just 20 minutes. During this period, Google had problems with its servers, which meant that customers who had signed up for a notification did not receive an email until too late (after most of the models had already sold out). According to information from Google, the high load was the cause of these problems. On the other hand, the devices sold out quickly because the number of devices available was very small.

In the months that followed, the Nexus 4 was only occasionally available for purchase. It became available again at the end of January 2013, and delivery times were also reduced.

Price development

When the device was launched online, it cost € 299 (8 GB version) and € 349 (16 GB) plus shipping costs directly from Google in Europe. In the US, the company was charging $ 299 (about € 225 plus tax) or $ 349 (16GB), which was about € 263. On August 28, 2013, shortly before the appearance of the successor Nexus 5 , Google lowered the price of both storage variants by 100 € (100 USD) each. Google refunded the difference to customers who paid the old price on or after August 12, 2013.

Test and criticism

The Nexus 4 was able to convince many independent test portals, which was not least due to the convincing price / performance ratio. The screen, the processing and the computing power are praised, but the lack of the possibility of an LTE data connection is criticized. Inside-handy.de also describes the camera as having room for improvement, as the photos show pale colors and often image noise. Nevertheless, the overall test rating is "very good" here too.

The device is still very popular as a developer device in the custom ROM scene; despite its age, it is number 21 of the most popular devices for LineageOS (as of July 2018).
