The Nexus 5 (Europe = LG D821, USA = LG D820) is an Android- based smartphone from the Nexus series from Google . It was created together with the Korean partner LG Electronics . The Nexus 5 was presented on October 31, 2013 and offered in the Google Play online shop on the same day . The Nexus 5 was delivered with the Android version 4.4 KitKat . It is the fifth device in the Nexus series and the successor to the Nexus 4 . The successor to the Nexus 5 has been the Nexus 5X since 2015 .
Technical specifications
hardware
The Nexus 5 measures 137.8 mm × 69.1 mm × 8.6 mm, weighs 130 grams, has a screen diagonal of around 126 mm (4.95 inches) with a point density of around 445 ppi and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 Pixels. It uses a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor that clocks at 2.26 GHz , 2 GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU with a clock rate of 450 MHz. The Nexus 5 can be charged by induction, with LG using the Qi standard for the wireless transmission of energy. The Nexus 5 dominates near-field communication ( Android Beam ), has an 8 megapixel - Rear Camera including optical image stabilization and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. The battery has a capacity of 2300 mAh . The device supports both GPS and GLONASS satellites.
As a special feature, a dedicated digital signal processor is built into the Nexus 5 , which enables the CPU to be relieved when playing audio files. As a result, the Nexus 5 should achieve a battery life of 60 hours when it is used exclusively as an MP3 player . In contrast to many competing models, the Nexus 5, as usual for the Nexus series, does not have the option of memory expansion using a memory card. The device also offers a notification LED, which can light up in different colors for notifications.
software
The Nexus 5 was the first smartphone to have Android 4.4 (KitKat) installed as the operating system. Among other things, the new version expanded the NFC capabilities, added a new HDR + camera mode and enabled video recording of the screen ("screen record") without root access, as is the case with other Android devices.
In addition, the start screen has been redesigned, making Google Now even more integrated. Google Now now enables, among other things, a voice and song search directly on the home screen. In addition, the SMS / MMS functionality has been moved from a stand-alone app to the Hangouts app. Conversations via the Google service or the Internet are also possible here.
The Nexus 5 is the reference hardware for the work surface called Plasma Mobile .
Update policy
Since its introduction in October 2015 with the “stagefright” security vulnerability, older models have also received the latest Android security updates for a longer period of time. The so-called "Major Updates", in which the name of the Android version changes (e.g. from "Lollipop" to "Marshmallow") are provided for a period of 2 years. Security updates are developed and distributed up to 3 years after the start of sales or 18 months from the end of the official sales period ("availability in the Play Store"). Since the sale took place until March 2015, the Nexus 5 received the last security update for version 6 "Marshmallow" in October 2016. To continue to receive updates, you can switch to a free alternative such as LineageOS or UbuntuTouch .
Sales start
The Nexus 5 was initially sold in the Google Play Store in the 16 GB version and in the 32 GB version. At the start of sales, the device was available in black and white, and since February 4, 2014 also in red. The device cost € 349 (16 GB version) and € 399 (32 GB) in some European countries plus shipping costs . When ordering online directly from Google in the US, the company charged $ 349 or $ 399 (32 GB) excluding taxes.
On March 11, 2015, sales in the Google Play Store ceased.
Trivia
A program error caused a restart of the phone when the network was busy. This problem was not fixed until Android 5.0.
At the end of 2018, researchers at the 35C3 showed how malicious code can be transmitted via the built-in Bluetooth chip . A solution to remedy the security gap is already being sought.
