The Nexus S (internal company name GT-i9020 or GT-i9023 ) is a smartphone from the Korean company Samsung , which was launched in Germany in mid-March 2011. The operating system of the device comes from the US company Google Inc.

The device is the successor to the Nexus One and was in turn replaced by the Galaxy Nexus .

Furnishing

A 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor ( Hummingbird ) works in the Nexus S. At the time of publication, it supports the latest mobile communications standards, can be networked via W-LAN and Bluetooth and has two cameras (5 megapixels on the back, 0.3 megapixels in the front).

The device was delivered with Android version 2.3.6 Gingerbread , updates were delivered up to version 4.1 Jelly Bean . For the last update, Android 4.1 was specially adapted to the Nexus S, as some functions are not available (e.g. face unlock, face recognition). There is no official update to version 4.2. The multi-touch capable Contour display with curved glass has a diagonal of 4 "(10.1 cm) and displays 800 × 480 pixels. There are two versions: One has the model number 9020 and an AMOLED screen, the other with a model number 9023 was shipped in Europe (excluding the UK) and has an LCD .

The equipment of the Nexus S is very similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 . In contrast to the Samsung Galaxy S I9000, the Nexus S has a three-axis gyroscope , near field communication as well as an LED flash and a curved screen, but no VHF radio, cannot film in 720p and has no microSD slot. It is also 10 grams heavier than the Galaxy S I9000.

The Nexus S is also the first smartphone to be approved on the International Space Station . A modified version is used here, in which the GSM chip has been removed and the battery has been replaced by six alkaline-manganese cells . In addition, the screen was protected with Teflon tape in the event that the glass should break .

Alternative Android versions

There were unofficial versions of the CyanogenMod developers up to Android 4.4 KitKat (CM11), but the bootloader must be unlocked to install. In newer CyanogenMod versions and its successor LineageOS was crespoor crespo4gnot removed, but not further developed.

Also Replicant has been ported to the Nexus S, but due to lack of availability of open drivers is very limited.

However, versions newer than Android 4.4 do not run on the Nexus S even with alternative Android versions.
