Peep Aru (born April 20, 1952 in Abja-Paluoja ) is an Estonian politician .

Early years

Peep Aru graduated from middle school in Elva, Estonia in 1971 . Until 1978 he studied economics at the Estonian Agricultural Academy ( Eesti Põllumajanduse Akadeemia ) in Tartu .

Aru worked in a collective farm from 1978 to 1980 , before he was employed by the Viljandi district administration and the Communist Party of Estonia from 1980 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1990 he worked in Viljandi in the Soviet agricultural industry.

From 1989 to 1993 Peep Aru was Deputy District Administrator of Viljandi County . From 1993 to 1996 he was the deputy mayor of Viljandi. Before returning to politics, Aru ran a bank branch in Viljandi.

From March 1997 to March 1999, Peep Aru was Minister without Portfolio in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Siimann . He performed the duties of a regional minister.

From 1999 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2007, Aru was the Lord Mayor of Viljandi. From 2003 to 2005 Aru was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

In 2005 he was the regional manager of the Estonian Post ( Eesti Post ) for south-west Estonia.

Since 2007 Aru has been a member of parliament again as a member of parliament and chairman of the finance committee. In June 2009 he was elected group leader of the Estonian Reform Party.

Aru was a member of the Liberal Estonian coalition party from 1995 to 2001 . After the party was dissolved, he has been a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party since 2002 .

Private life

Peep Aru is married and has two children.
