Main round

The mode in the 2009/2010 season was retained as in previous years. In the main round, each team plays each other twice (first and second leg). The first five teams reach the championship round, in that each team plays once against each other in this round; while the last three teams have to go into the relegation round. There they meet the other teams in the round twice. Only the winner of this round managed to stay in the league directly, the two last placed play in relegation games against the winners of the second Bundesliga (relay east and west). The teams in places 1–5 now play in the championship round for the playoff places (places 1–4) in just one game against every other team. The teams in places 5-8 each play twice against the other participants in the round in the relegation round - the two league bottom then play in relegation games against the winners of the playoffs of the 2nd Bundesliga . In both rounds, the points from the main round were taken over.
