history

The beginnings of the Estonian postal system go back to the 17th century when the Swedish government under the then Queen Christina decreedly expanded the Swedish postal service to Estonia and Livonia in 1638 .

In 1917, the Estonian Post Office had 157 post offices spread across the country. After the occupation of Estonian territory by German troops in the course of the First World War , the occupiers took over the main post office in Tallinn and dissolved the country's postal system that had existed until then. After the end of the war, the Estonian Post Office was re-established on November 13, 1918, and nine days later, on November 22, 1918, the first postage stamp appeared. On May 19, 1922, the Estonian Post joined the Universal Postal Union for the first time . During the Second World War , the post came under the influence of the chaos of the war, but was able to continue operations. At the end of the war in 1945, Estonia had one main post office, eleven administrative centers, 206 post offices and 404 postal agencies. In the following years the postal system was further expanded. From 1955, the increasing motorization of mail transport took place, which until then had mainly been done by horses.

In the course of Estonia's independence from the Soviet Union , today's Eesti Post was founded as a state-owned postal company on June 1, 1991 .
