history

The current town of Abja-Paluoja got its name from the historic Abja manor house (first mentioned in 1504) and the Paluoja jug , which was located on the road from Pärnu to Valga . The traditional autumn market, which played an important role in the cattle trade between Riga and northern Estonia, took place there until the beginning of the 20th century .

Flax cultivation began very early on, which has made the region prosper after the Northern War and a plague epidemic that has been overcome since the 18th century.

Around 1890, more craftsmen and traders settled in what was then Paluoja. The place experienced a further economic boom from 1895 through the construction of the narrow-gauge railway from Mõisaküla to Viljandi (in operation until 1973). Therefore the reaching industrialization Abja-Paluoja.

In 1993 the place received city rights. In 1998 Abja-Paluoja was administratively subordinate to the municipality of Abja and with this in 2017 to the municipality of Mulgi .
