Abja is a former rural community in the Estonian district of Viljandi with an area of 290.21 km². It had 2514 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2010). On October 24, 2017, the rural parishes of Karksi , Abja, Halliste and the small town of Mõisaküla were merged to form the new rural municipality Mulgi .
Abja was in the south of the district and borders on Latvia . It was first mentioned in a document in 1504. In addition to the main town Abja-Paluoja (German: Abia-Palloja ), which was incorporated as a community-integrated city in 1998, the rural community included the villages Abja-Vanamõisa, Abjaku, Atika, Kamara, Laatre, Lasari, Penuja, Põlde, Raamatu, Räägu, Saate , Sarja, Umbsoo, Veelikse and Veskimäe.
Abja has a community partnership with Nummi-Pusula in Finland .
