history

Both Nummi and Pusula were chapel communities in the Lohja parish from the 17th century . In 1862 the Finnish Senate decided to separate Pusula from Lohja as an independent parish, with Nummi following a year later. When the administration of the rural parishes was separated from the church administration in 1865, Nummi and Pusula became political parishes. In 1981 they united to form the Nummi-Pusula community. At the beginning of 2013, Nummi-Pusula was incorporated into the city of Lohja together with Karjalohja .

Economy and Infrastructure

The Pitkämäki Tunnel on State Road 1

Nummi-Pusula is located in the greater Helsinki area . The motorway-like state road 1 ( E 18 ) from Helsinki to Turku touches the former municipal area at the level of the Saukkola district, and many residents of the municipality commute on this route daily to their workplaces in Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo or in the nearby regional center Lohja.

The local economic structure, on the other hand, is shaped by small towns, with most of the registered companies being small and micro-enterprises. Of the 1660 jobs in the municipality in 2000, 436 were provided by the public sector, while agriculture and forestry accounted for 312 jobs. Unemployment in March 2007 was 7.6 percent, around the national average.

The largest private employer is the hydraulics manufacturer Nurmy Hydraulic Oy with around 150 employees. At its location in the Ikkala district, the company produces large cylinders for industrial hydraulic systems; the commercial vehicle hydraulics division was transferred in 2006 to the subsidiary Nurmi Auto Oy , which is also based in Ikkala . The second larger industrial company with 60 employees is Oy Pumppu-Lohja AB , which develops industrial pump and filter systems. The two companies mentioned did not settle in Nummi-Pusula until the 1990s. Before that there had been a few companies in the textile industry in the community, but this put an end to the relocation of production sites to cheaper foreign countries. The municipal administration endeavors to lure more companies to Nummi-Pusula by developing an industrial area on the edge of the state road.

Culture and sights

The Church of Nummi
The church of Pusula

The three churches of the parish are among the architectural sights of Nummi-Pusula: The church of Nummi was completed in 1822 according to plans by AN Edelcranz . The neoclassical Kreuzkirche is characterized by the use of field stone , a building material that was rare for that architectural era. The pulpit in the interior of the church is from the previous wooden building from 1635. The crucifix of the church, which probably dates from the late 14th century, is even older . Together with some of the surrounding buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, the ensemble of the church village Nummi is inscribed in the Finnish monument protection register. The wooden church of Pusula designed by Henrik Andsten was consecrated in 1838. However, it soon turned out to be a faulty construction and threatened to collapse under the weight of the oversized roof. In 1858-1859 the church was rebuilt and the roof was lowered by eight meters. A third church is in the village of Kärkölä. It is also made of wood and dates from 1842. The cultural landscapes at the confluence of the Nummenjoki and Pusulanjoki rivers, on Lake Pusulanjärvi and in the area of the villages of Retlahti and Vörlö as well as the small farm of Myllymäki from the end of the 19th century are also listed .

The Dairy Museum in Saukkola is in a Jugendstil housed -Molkerei from the early 20th century. In the Kovela manor near Pusula there is a manor house and handicraft museum as well as a tractor museum, in which several hundred tractors are exhibited, mainly from the period between 1920 and 1955. The Hyrsylän mutka log cabin, recreated in the Karelian style, serves as a house museum. It was built in 1983 by the artist Aira Samulin , who had to flee from her home village of Hyrsylä after World War II when Finland ceded eastern Karelia to the Soviet Union .

coat of arms

The municipality of Nummi-Pusula bore the coat of arms of the former municipality of Nummi. It was designed by the heraldist Gustaf von Numers and shows a silver padlock in the blue field . The castle is reminiscent of the one that was used to close the parish's tithe barn, which has long been a landmark of the area.
