Gustaf von Numers (heraldist)

Gustaf von Numers (born July 31, 1912 in Kangasala , † May 21, 1978 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish official and a leading modern heraldry .

Von Numers studied heraldry in the 1930s . He was considered one of the leading Finnish experts in this field. With the support of many colleagues, he contributed to the creation of parliamentary laws on the municipal coats of arms in Finland in 1949. He created around 150 municipal coats of arms, as well as military banners and family coats of arms. He was a founding member of the Finnish Heraldry Society "Heraldic Animal" and was also its first chairman from 1957–1964. As a member of the International Council of Aristocrats of the Heraldic Academy (Académie Internationale d'Héraldique) since its foundation in 1949, von Numers has earned high recognition.

Due to his high reputation, an international award set up in 1982 was named after him in memory of him. It bears the name Gustav von Numers Prize for Heraldic Art and Design and is an award for individuals to honor their services in heraldic design and art. The heraldist Ottfried Neubecker received this award in 1982, the heraldist Carl Alexander von Volborth (1919–2009) in 1984.

The playwright and writer Gustaf von Numers (born March 21, 1848 in Maxmo , † February 6, 1913 in Kannus ) was a distant relative.
