Pusula is located in the west of the southern Finnish landscape of Uusimaa, around 30 kilometers north of the core city of Lohja and 70 kilometers northwest of the capital Helsinki . The former municipal area of Pusula has an area of 269.0 square kilometers. The last population of the municipality was 2,988 (as of 1973). There are two settlement centers in the former municipality of Pusula: The church village of Pusula, which is located on the north bank of Lake Pusulanjärvi and has 787 inhabitants, and Ikkala with 256 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

Pusula was from the 17th century, a chapel community of the parish Lohja. In 1862 Pusula was dissolved from Lohja as an independent parish. When the administration of the rural communities was separated from the church administration in 1865, Pusula became a political community. In 1981, Pusula merged with the neighboring municipality of Nummi to form the municipality of Nummi-Pusula , which in turn was incorporated into the city of Lohja in 2013.

One of the sights of Pusula is the church of Pusula, consecrated in 1838. The wooden church of Pusula, designed by Henrik Andsten , soon after its completion turned out to be a faulty construction and threatened to collapse under the weight of the oversized roof. In 1858-1859 the church was rebuilt and the roof was lowered by eight meters. Another church is located in the village of Kärkölä, which belongs to Pusula. It is also made of wood and dates from 1842.
