particularities

The Nexus 5X (codename: bullhead) is an on Android -based smartphone the Nexus series of Google . It was created together with the Korean partner LG Electronics . The Nexus 5X was presented on September 29, 2015 together with the Nexus 6P and offered for pre-order in the USA on the same day in the Google Store online shop . The Nexus 5X was delivered with the Android version 6.0  Marshmallow . It was the successor to the Nexus 5 and, together with the Nexus 6P, the last model in the Nexus series. Devices later brought onto the market by Google are called " Pixels ".

Technical specifications

hardware

The Nexus 5X measures 147 mm × 72.6 mm × 7.9 mm, weighs 136 grams, has a screen diagonal of around 132 mm (5.2 inches) with a point density of around 423 ppi and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It uses a Snapdragon 808 hexacore processor clocked at 1.8 GHz , 2  GB RAM and an Adreno 418 GPU . In contrast to its predecessor , the device can no longer be charged by induction.

A special feature was the use of the new, twist-proof USB-C connection. Quick Charge is not supported, but charging according to the USB-C specification with 5V and 3A. The Nexus 5X dominated near-field communication ( Android Beam ), has a 12,3- megapixels - rear camera with infrared - laser -supported autofocus and a 5-megapixel front camera. By using particularly large pixels with a distance of 1.55  µm , the use of an optical image stabilizer , which the predecessor device still had, should be superfluous. The battery has a capacity of 2700 mAh. The device supports both GPS and GLONASS satellites. As the first device in the Nexus series, a fingerprint scanner is installed on the back for unlocking the device and for authorization within apps, which is called Nexus Imprint .

As with its predecessor, the device is equipped with 16 or 32 GB of non-expandable storage space. The available colors are anthracite , quartz and ice blue .

software

The Nexus 5X, together with the Nexus 6P, was the first device with preinstalled Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) .

Android 7.1.2 was made available for the device in July 2017, but the following functions are missing compared to the variant offered for the successor devices "Google Pixel":

  • Night mode ("Night Light")
  • Daydream VR mode

The Google Assistant (similar to Apple's "Siri"), which was initially reserved for the Google Pixel, has also been available for the Nexus 5X since March 2017.

Android version 8.0 has been running on the Nexus 5X since August 21, 2017. In December 2017, Android 8.1 was available for the Nexus 5X. The supply of system updates from Google ended in December 2018.

Sales start and prices

In the USA and some other countries, the device could be pre-ordered from the time it was presented in Google's online hardware store, Google Store . The first copies were delivered from October 19, 2015.

In other countries such as Germany or Austria, delivery began on November 9th.

The price for the cheapest model (16GB memory) was 479 euros at the start of sales in the Google online shop; this fell to 349 euros at the end of January 2016. At the end of the sale, the device was available for less than 300 euros. The 32GB model was 50 euros more expensive.

Marketing end and successor

At the beginning of October 2016, the Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P and all accessories for both models were removed from the Google Store. The reason for this was the start of sales of the successor series " Pixel ". Along with the devices, any reference to the Nexus range has also been removed.

Class action, "Bootloop"

In the US, LG - as the manufacturer of the Nexus 5X - settled a class action lawsuit in January 2018 that was initiated over a hardware problem. Quite a few copies got into an endless loop at the start, which ultimately made them unusable. As part of the settlement, victims in the USA could receive compensation.
