Mobile High-Definition Link (except GT-I9301)

The Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300 and GT-I9301 without LTE , GT-I9305 and SGH-I747M with LTE) is a smartphone that was presented by the manufacturer Samsung on May 3, 2012 in London. It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S II . Like all Galaxy models, it is equipped with the Android operating system and the additional TouchWiz user interface . The Galaxy S III was first introduced with Android 4.0.4 and is also the first smartphone from Samsung that was intended to be upgraded with the Qi standard .

The successor model Samsung Galaxy S4 was presented on March 14, 2013 in New York.

design

back

The case of the Samsung Galaxy S III is made of the plastic polycarbonate and was offered in two colors at the start of sales: Marble White ("marble white") and Pebble Blue ("pebble blue"). In North America - exclusively for AT&T - a red version ( Garnet Red ) was also available from July 29, 2012 . In Germany, the network operator O 2 took over the sale of the red model. In some countries, the device was also offered retrospectively in a gray, brown and black color variant. The device has a size of 133 mm × 70.6 mm × 8.6 mm and a weight of 133 grams.

technology

General

The device has a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display with multi-touch technology made of Gorilla Glass 2 and an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. The LED flash is located on the left side next to the camera. In addition to photos and videos, video conferences are also possible with the front camera. It is available with 16 GB, 32 GB and - since September 2012 - also with 64 GB integrated mass storage . Using an external MicroSD, MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC card, the storage capacity can be expanded by a maximum of 128 GB.

Software features

Samsung expanded the functions of the Android operating system to include a function that prevents the screen from being switched off while you are looking at it (“Smart Stay”), to a new voice control (“ S Voice ”), face recognition for photos (“Buddy Photo Share” ") And presentation functions (" AllShare Cast "and" Group Cast ", for this you need an additional device called a" dongle ").

The CPU clock can be throttled to a minimum of 200 MHz when the system is not or only slightly loaded. The clock rate can also be limited in the energy-saving options in order to extend the battery life.

Apps and accessories

Pre-installed apps in Germany were the in-house instant messenger ChatOn , the app from the newspaper Bild , the hotel search HRS , the shopping advisor KaufDa Navigator , the app Lieferheld , the app store from Samsung, the taxi ordering service MyTaxi , the application for saving notes SMemo , the Appointment calendar SPlanner and - until June 26, 2014 - the app recommendation tool SSuggest . Accessories for inductive battery charging, a dock / charger, the S Pebble MP3 player remote control and a car holder are optionally available. In addition, the buyer of the device was offered 50 GB of hard drive space for the Dropbox web service , limited to two years.

Wireless charging can be retrofitted with a special rear cover.

processor

The international version has Samsung's own System-on-a-Chip with a 1.4 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU ( Samsung Exynos 4412) and an ARM Mali 400 MP GPU . A Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC with LTE support is used for the i747M version .

MHL

There is an MHL interface for the transmission of audio / video data . However, this differs from the MHL standard, which is why a special adapter from Samsung is required.

Bluetooth 4.0

Despite the existing Bluetooth 4.0 chipset, no corresponding accessories could be used for a long time, as the Android operating system lacked the necessary Bluetooth 4.0 support. This only changed with Android 4.3, which was delivered at the beginning of 2014.

LTE support

In some countries, the Samsung Galaxy S III has been available with LTE support since its introduction , but the corresponding variant was initially not sold in Germany. It was not until August 2012 that Telekom Deutschland announced that it would offer the smartphone exclusively in the LTE version, which was a little more expensive than the standard model.

The VHF radio is omitted in the LTE variant GT-i9305, but the RAM doubles from 1 GB to 2 GB, which improves multitasking.

Marketing and sales

Samsung declared the smartphone to be the “official smartphone of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games” and advertised it with a love of nature. Two months after the start of sales, over ten million devices were sold worldwide; The manufacturer was able to deliver 20 million units by early September 2012 and 30 million units by early November. In March 2013, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S3 had sold over 50 million units worldwide.

Ban on sale

In July 2012, Samsung released an update labeled a stability update that deactivates certain functions of the smartphone. This includes the local search, with which contacts can be found using the central Google input field . This process is patented by Apple , which had already led to a sale of the Galaxy Nexus in the USA . Therefore, the system update was mostly judged as a precautionary measure by Samsung to prevent a possible sale of the Galaxy S III. Samsung, on the other hand, stated that it was a bug and promised to restore the disabled functions.

Evaluation and criticism

In expert tests, the S Voice voice control turned out to be less than ideal compared to Apple's Siri . The high speed enabled by the quad-core processor when opening applications and surfing as well as the very good voice quality when making calls were rated as convincing.

Some owners of the Galaxy S III report fine cracks in the polycarbonate housing and the gorilla glass screen of the device, which apparently formed without any external cause; Samsung will investigate the problem and assured everyone concerned that it will be repaired under the guarantee. The same applies to the so-called sudden death problem, which is a malfunction of the internal flash memory in some 16 GB models produced in 2012 and can lead to sudden system crashes or even total failures. This error has now been fixed on a hardware basis, and newer devices are equipped with a revised mainboard accordingly. For models affected by the problem, the system board was replaced under warranty.

In a quick test by Stiftung Warentest on test.de , the large screen with excellent image quality and sharpness, the high working speed and low weight as well as the battery power were praised, while the poor voice quality with loud background noises and an "antenna problem" (when touching the antenna on the Housing decreases the radio performance significantly) was criticized.

Newer Android versions

At the market launch , the Samsung Galaxy S3 was delivered with Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich . Version 4.1.1 of JellyBean was available from October 2012 , and version 4.1.2 followed between December 2012 and January 2013, depending on the region. This brought with it some new functions as part of the so-called PremiumSuite , including the multi-window feature, which enables the simultaneous display of two apps running at the same time, one above the other (portrait) or side by side (landscape). Furthermore, the camera and the gallery view have been expanded to include additional functions such as the 3D spiral view.

The original plan was to release Android 4.2.2 including some of the functions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in the course of 2013 . However, the plans were stopped because of various adjustment problems with the TouchWiz user interface and it was decided to offer Android 4.3 directly later in the second half of the year. This was made available in several European countries in November 2013, but it soon proved to be not fully developed, which resulted in serious malfunctions for many users. For those reasons, it was then taken off the grid relatively quickly.

The revised and functional version of Android 4.3 has been distributed since the end of 2013, almost exactly one year after the last official version. The most important innovations are TRIM support, new GPU drivers for faster graphics, parts of the new TouchWiz surface of the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, a new Samsung keyboard and Apps2SD, which enables apps to be installed on the memory card. At the beginning of May 2014, Samsung officially announced that there would be no Android 4.4 for the 3G version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and for the Galaxy S3 mini , since 1 GB of RAM is sufficient for Android 4.4, but not for Samsung's own Touch-Wiz interface . This does not apply to the 3G models of the Samsung Galaxy S3 from the US wireless service provider Sprint, where this version was only partially distributed as these models have 2 GB of RAM. Android 4.4 has been available for the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 since January 2015.

Galaxy S III Mini

On September 11, 2012, the smaller Samsung Galaxy S III mini (GT-i8190) was presented, which compared to the Galaxy S III has a 4-inch display with 800 × 480  px resolution, a dual-core processor clocked at 1 GHz and a 5 megapixel camera offers.

The GT-i8200 variant (also known as Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini VE - "Value Edition") also offers Android 4.2.2 instead of 4.1.2 and the camera user interface of the S4 and S3 Neo.

Galaxy S III Neo

After complaints from users about the lack of Android 4.4 KitKat , Samsung announced the S III Neo (GT-i9301, GT-i9301i) in June 2014, which has a larger RAM than the GT-i9300 of 1.5 GB and the newer Android version KitKat differs from normal S3. Its appearance and the rest of its components, such as screen resolution and pixel density, are identical to those of the S3. However, unlike the S3, the S3 Neo does not offer MHL support, which is necessary for connecting HDMI devices to the micro-USB port. This smartphone appeared in June 2014.

USB OTG (with this a USB mass storage device or a camera can be connected to the smartphone) is only possible with an OTG-Y cable.

The option of inductive battery charging has also been omitted. The two contacts on the S3 were still to the left of the battery compartment. The 4G standard LTE is also not supported.

The camera app user interface is now the same as that of the Note 3 , which is also known from the S4 models. It allows you to take photos and video recordings without switching between two recording modes. However, the S3 Neo does not have numerous camera functions, such as video stabilization and "zero shutter lag". These functions are available on the S4 and Note 3, although the camera user interface design is otherwise identical. With the S3 Neo, the camera takes 3 seconds to start instead of just one.

The design of the external microSD slot has been changed. It is now piggybacked over the SIM card slot and can accommodate a MicroSD, MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC card up to 64 GB. With a maximum size of 64 GB, it has the characteristics of a 32 or 64 GB S3, but has only 16 GB of internal storage. The 16 GB version of the S3 could only be expanded by 32 GB.

Samsung has also made some changes to the pre-installed software. For example, in alphabetical order, the apps from Samsung are grouped together in a “Samsung” folder. The apps HRS Hotels , kaufda , Lieferheld, MyBoard and Zalando have been added to the version for the German market.

The Neo was shipped with Android 4.4.2 in May 2015. As of Android 4.4, the write authorization for the external memory card has been changed, which means that many apps can no longer write to it. In addition, the “Screen Mirroring” software was deactivated, which is required for presentations via the “Allshare Cast Hub Dongle” (an additional device as a presentation receiver on an external monitor).
